Rapid Night of Football at Villa Park

Watching the action
The action was fast and frentic
Our Summer of Sport continued at Villa Park last night as we took a group of  young people to Villa Park to watch the 2nd leg Europa League Playoff between Aston Villa and Rapid Vienna.

It was a special night for some of the group has it was the first time they had ever been to see a premiership team or stadium to watch a game of football. The added atmosphere of an European game gave the night another dimension - especially the half naked Rapid Vienna fans singing up a storm of support from their end of the stands.

The Excellent Rapid Vienna Fan's
It was an excellent game for the neutral fan that swung from the highs of Villa taking the lead to lows of Rapid Vienna's excellent fight back to eventually win the game 2-3 on the night (4-3 on aggregate). Click here for a full BBC report of the game.

Feedback from the young people was excellent and they all thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

St. Martins' at Great Britain & Hungary basketball, 17th August 2010.

In full continuation of the sports' theme for August, staff and young people at St. Martins' Youth Centre visited the NIA, Birmingham to attend a basketball match.

On Tuesday 17th August, we took a visit to watch Great Britain beat Hungary (Mens' Basketball) in a 66-64 win with a critical final 2 minutes. All young people that attended thoroughly enjoyed watching the live game from excellent seats at the front of the stand.

Not only did we watch the match, but two of the young people in the group - Greg and David were given the chance to compete in a street dance-off for the prize of a holiday to Butlins Resort. This was an excellent chance to demonstrate their dancing ability, cheered on by their peers.

Overall we had an enjoyable evening at the basketball which proved to be a fun time for all involved. For full details of the match, click here.

Tabata at St. Martins Youth Centre!

With the summer being upon us (with a small lack of sun) we felt that it was time to make sure that staff and young people at St. Martins were getting a regular workout on a Monday evening.

This brings us to Tabata... a way of working out for short periods at high intensity for quick results.
This involves a regimen of 20 seconds ultra-intense exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated continuously for 4 minutes (8 cycles). With a one minute rest, we then continued on to the next type of exercise for the same length of time. In total, we managed to do this for 30 minutes, all agreeing that we felt energised and could feel effects of the exercise.

Research shows that two weeks of high intensity training can substantially improve insulin action in young men, possibly preventing a method for prevention of type-2 diabetes.

We plan to maintain this routine throughout the summer; if you would like to join us then please contact Dean on 0121 622 2005 or email
